Tribute to Jana Iverson

Jana Iverson is currently the Principal at the Nyssa School District in Nyssa, Oregon. She will be leaving that post soon to become the new vice superintendant of the school district. We, her co-workers, were asked to give her the gift of our favorite thoughts or memories of her. This was mine...

Seven years ago I started working for the Nyssa School Cafeteria. Penny had me set up to serve over at the middle school. I knew no one and felt very uncomfortable being over by myself. The one thing that made it easier for me was the fact that there was this lady who came out to the commons everyday with a smile on her face to check and see how I was doing. We never had "introductions" per se...but she knew me by name!

About a month goes by and this lady comes out to say hi...Terri is still with me helping me set up. We have our normal short conversation and this wonderful lady leaves. I look to Terri and ask what this lady's name is. Terri replies..."Oh. That is Jana Iverson!" OK. Fine. Whatever.

A couple of weeks later in a conversation with Terri I find out that this wonderful person is the principal of the middle school! Oh my heart! What have I done! I have been joking with this person for weeks and she is the principal!?! That can't be! That is the ultimate No-No! You just don't get close to or involved with the upper echelon!

Wrong! Jana made it easy from day one with her smile, warm personality and attitude towards the "lunch ladies" in general. It has been a wonderful seven years working with you, Jana. After being gone for the summer I have always looked forward to seeing and working with you again. I will miss you so very much!

By the way, Jana...about the middle of the second year I found out from Lana that you were of the same faith as Lana and I...Another heart attack! I have been joking with you in ways that a lot of members might have wondered about my sanity or even the validity of just me...you have always made me feel good about myself and I know that I can talk to you about anything and you will listen. Thank you for being you!
